The transfer window slammed shut last night at 11pm and we were left with no new number 9, or even a new striker for that matter. Was pretty quiet throughout the last day of the window, but surely into the last day any efforts were too little too late. We’ve had since the summer, actually know we’ve had since January to scout targets and get someone sorted out with the Andy Carroll money which has now well and truly disappeared.
I am not at all surprised that we have not brought in a new striker, but more left disappointed. Surely that had to be the main priority due to the lack of firepower our current forwards have. None of them looked premier league quality last season so it looks like we are in for another difficult season on the goalscoring front – although everyone was saying that at the start of last season and up popped Andy Carroll scoring goals for fun! Then after selling Carroll that question came again about where the goals would come from and we managed to score 4 against Arsenal!
So maybe it is to soon to write them all off, but I for one am not convinced by them at all. Lovenkrands by far the worst, just not good enough at all. When he is “playing” it is actually like having 10 men on the pitch. He doesn’t ever seem to be involved. Also selling our top scorer in midfielder Kevin Nolan takes away our goals from midfield, Joey Barton even bagged a few last season as well.
So a very quiet last day of the window with a little bit of speculation that we tried to steal the transfer of Bryan Ruiz who looked all but certain to be joining Fulham . . . and why would the club think he would pick us over Fulham when they are playing in Europe this season? Probably just so it looked like they were actually trying to bring someone in!
I would have taken a loan deal or two with a midfielder and a striker our squad is very thin. Especially when you see Sunderland taking Nicklas Bendtner on loan for the season. I would have easily taken him on loan! But again we didn’t even make any effort to bring him to the club.
I hope that they start working on it now to find some targets for January – hopefully it won’t be too late by then! We don’t want to have too much pressure put on the strikers we have at the moment when clearly they are not good enough – let’s hope I am wrong and can laugh at this blog post in the future!
